Maji na Ufanisi scooped the first position in the 2015 AfricaSan Awards, Youth Category where recognition is given to agencies and organisations that promote water and sanitation with a positive and significant impact on the youth.

The African Ministries Council on Water (AMCOW) AfricaSan Awards for sanitation and hygiene were formally launched during the 2nd Africa Sanitation Conference in 2008. The awards are dedicated to recognizing outstanding efforts and achievements in sanitation and hygiene in Africa which result in large-scale, sustainable behaviour changes and tangible impacts. The aim is to raise the profile of sanitation and hygiene by drawing attention to successful approaches, promoting excellence in leadership, innovation and sanitation and hygiene improvements in Africa.

Maji na Ufanisi won the award for their exemplary work in sanitation and hygiene in Kenya where MnU has focused on modelling pro-poor quality and sustainable WASH projects. The project that won the award targeted the youth in Kongowea Market, Mombasa County through the implementation of the Maji na Ufanisi WASH Entrepreneurial Model which entails the construction and rehabilitation of water and sanitation (WASH) facilities in public markets and spaces, then undertake capacity of the youth within the facilities to sustainably operate and manage the facilities.

The success of the project came after a unique and strategic partnership between Mombasa County, the Youth, Kongowea Traders Association and Maji na Ufanisi, with seed funding from Government of Sweden. The project has provided youth with an opportunity to salvage failed market toilets and enabled them to build a thriving, independently managed facilities that serve over 20,000 market users every day.
