Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Markets, Health and Educational Institutions

Maji na Ufanisi and Kakamega County Government have entered into a partnership agreement that is aimed at transforming the lives of the Kakamega County residents through strategic water and sanitation intervention in schools communities and public markets.

The goal of the partnership is to enhance the county’s capacity to achieve water and sanitation security to respond to vulnerability and poverty and meet the socio-economic and environmental needs and therefore improve living standards for all citizens in Kakamega.

In May 2014 Kakamega County signed a Letter of Intent (attached) with Maji na Ufanisi aimed at providing a framework for cooperation in water resources development for social, economic, livelihoods and health to improve the citizens’ well-being.

In pursuit of this agreement, a further meeting comprising of the Governor of Kakamega, the Ministers for health, Water, Trade and Education, with the Chairpersons of the respective County Assembly Committees and technical officers have decided to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for development of water, sanitation and hygiene services on the complementary subsectors of Markets, Health, and Educational Institutions.

The proposed partnerships will promote improved water and sanitation conditions for citizens and improve living conditions for communities especially the vulnerable and marginalized segments of society like the women, youth, aged and people with disabilities.

The expected impact from the partnership will be increased school enrollment, retention and improved performance within the target schools, improved capacity by county government to deliver responsive laws, policies and services, improved personal hygiene and environmental sanitation in public spaces.

It is expected to lead to increased citizens’ participation in management of development projects and decision making at county level, sustainability of projects through enterprise development and more awareness among the citizens on their right to demand for service provision by the primary duty bearer as enshrined within the Kenyan Constitution.
