Awards and Recognition

Over the years, Maji na Ufanisi has demonstrated leadership and innovativeness in ensuring that there is sustainable and equitable WES services in Kenya and in Africa. The organization has done a lot of commendable work which has frequently been acclaimed by peer NGOs, public offices and the private sector.

In this regard, in 2006 MnU received the Mashariki Innovations in Local Government Awards Programme (MILGAP) recognition for sustainability and leadership.

In October 2007, MnU was awarded the National Settlement Human Award. This award recognized MnU’s contribution to the improvement of human settlements by increasing accessibility of water and sanitation in slum areas.

MnU hosts the Civil Society Urban Development Programme (CSUDP). The CSUDP is a major programme supported by the Embassy of Sweden that strives to promote coordination, access to basic services and governance/policy change in urban matters. The CSUDP funds several Implementing Partners (IPs) which include Haki Jamii (Economic and Social Rights Centre), National Cooperative Housing Union (NACHU), Pamoja Trust, K Rep Development Agency and Shelter Forum.

MnU is recognized in the Water Sector by the communities, Government, NGOs and development partners.  In particular, MnU is a key member of the National Urban Policy Development Program, MnU is a member of the Inter-agency Committee of the Ministry of Public Health and is a key member in the National Organizing Committee for the World Water Day celebrations in Kenya. MnU is the implementing partner for the Government of Kenya (GoK) and UN HABITAT in the Kenya Slum Upgrading Programme (KENSUP).

Furthermore, Mnu is the lead agency in the Water Thematic Group under the Kenya Climate Change Working Group (KCCWG) and MnU was a founder member of the Kenya Water Sanitation Network (KEWASNET).

Finally, MnU housed the Secretariat of the Africa Civil Society Network on Water and Sanitation (ANEW) for a period of over 7 years, and continues being an active member of this continental body.

In  April 2015 Maji na Ufanisi scooped the first position in the 2015 AfricaSan Awards, Youth Category where recognition is given to agencies and organisations that promote water and sanitation with a positive and significant impact on the youth. 

Maji na Ufanisi won the award for their exemplary work in sanitation and hygiene in Kenya where MnU has focused on modelling pro-poor quality and sustainable WASH projects. The project that won the award targeted the youth in Kongowea Market, Mombasa County through the implementation of the Maji na Ufanisi WASH Entrepreneurial Model which entails the construction and rehabilitation of water and sanitation (WASH) facilities in public markets and spaces, then undertake capacity of the youth within the facilities to sustainably operate and manage the facilities.


The success of the project came after a unique and strategic partnership between Mombasa County, the Youth, Kongowea Traders Association and Maji na Ufanisi, with seed funding from Government of Sweden. The project has provided youth with opportunity to salvage failed market toilets and enabled them build a thriving, independently managed facilities that serve over 20,000 market users every day.
